Hockey Tournament Packing List for Parents
Short answer: Pack three bags. The gear bag is checked head to toe, with spares and both jerseys. The hotel bag holds clothes, chargers, and a way to dry gear in the room. The rink bag is for you: warm layers, a blanket, and snacks, because you'll spend hours in a cold building. Then do a Sunday pack-out check at the last rink so nothing gets left in the locker room.

Tournaments stack several games across a weekend, sometimes at more than one rink, with gaps of an hour or a whole afternoon between them. Packing well mostly means planning for those gaps.
1. The gear bag (check it head to toe)
Lay everything out and pack it in order from head to feet. That's the easiest way to notice what's missing.
- Helmet with cage or shield
- Neck guard (if your league or team requires it)
- Mouthguard (if used)
- Shoulder pads
- Elbow pads
- Gloves
- Base layer
- Jock or jill with the socks attached
- Hockey pants (or a girdle and shell)
- Shin guards
- Hockey socks
- Skates with skate guards
- Both jerseys, home and away or light and dark. Ask the coach which is needed for each game.
- Sticks, plus a spare if you have one
Small stuff that saves a game
- Stick tape and sock tape
- Spare laces
- Towel for wiping blades
- Labeled water bottle
- Small screwdriver or tool if your equipment uses screws
- Spare mouthguard or helmet parts you already own
Tip: If the skates need sharpening, get it done a day or more before you leave, not the morning of the first game. Some players need a practice to feel settled on a fresh edge.
2. The hotel bag
- Clothes for each day, plus team apparel if the team asked for it
- Pajamas, toiletries, swimsuit if the hotel has a pool
- Phone and device chargers, and a power strip
- A way to dry gear: a small fan, a portable drying rack, or just a plan to open the bag and hang everything up as soon as you're in the room
- Laundry bag for base layers and socks
- Snacks and water for the room
- Something for siblings, if they're coming
Gear drying in a hotel room: Take everything out of the bag after each game. Hang or spread it out and get air moving. Gear left zipped in a bag overnight doesn't dry, and the next morning is no fun for anyone.
3. The rink bag (for parents)
Rinks are cold, and you may be there from the first warm-up to the last game.
- Warm layers: hat, gloves, a heavier coat than you think you need
- Blanket or stadium seat
- Hand warmers
- Refillable coffee mug or thermos, if the rink allows it
- Snacks and water for you and siblings
- Phone battery pack
- Cash and card (entry fees, programs, concessions vary)
- Rink addresses and parking notes saved offline
4. Plan the schedule before you pack the car
A one-page schedule removes most of the weekend's stress. For each game write:
| Game | Day | Puck drop | Arrive by | Rink / sheet | Jersey |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | |||||
| 2 | |||||
| 3 |
- Arrive by is whatever your coach asks for. Teams often want players there well before puck drop to dress.
- Note which games are at a different rink and how long the drive is.
- Mark hotel checkout time against Sunday's games so you know whether you're checking out before or after.
- Tournament schedules can change. Watch for updates from your coach or the tournament.
5. Between games
- Short gap: stay at the rink. Keep the player warm and fed, and keep the gear bag open so it airs out.
- Long gap: go back to the hotel or grab a meal. Take everything out of the bag to dry, and set an alarm for when to leave for the next game.
6. Sunday pack-out (at the last rink)
Locker rooms are where weekends lose things.
- Run the head-to-toe list again as gear goes back in the bag
- Both jerseys
- Sticks (count them)
- Skate guards
- Water bottle
- Hotel room check before you leave: chargers, gear drying on the rack, anything under the beds
- At home: open the bag and hang everything to dry the same night
