Swim Meet Packing List for Parents

Short answer: Pack in four groups: the swimmer's bag (two suits if you have them, two pairs of goggles, two caps, two towels, warm layers, flip-flops), the parent bag (chair or cushion, pen or marker, phone charger, something to read), the cooler (water and the snacks your swimmer already eats), and a night-before routine (bag packed by the door, meet info saved, alarm set). The spares matter most. A snapped goggle strap or a torn cap is the thing most likely to go wrong on deck.

Meets tend to mean a lot of sitting and waiting, then a sudden rush when your swimmer's event comes up. A packing list keeps you ready for the rush without hauling half the house.

1. The swimmer's bag

Pack this with your swimmer so they know where things are. If they're old enough, let them pack it and you check it.

In the water

  • Team or meet suit (plus a second suit if they have one)
  • Goggles, plus a spare pair already adjusted to fit
  • Swim cap, plus a spare
  • Anything the coach asked them to bring (a team cap, specific suit)

Out of the water

  • Two towels. One gets soaked in warm-up, and the second one is for later.
  • Warm layers for between events: sweatshirt or parka, sweatpants, socks
  • Flip-flops or pool sandals
  • A dry change of clothes for the drive home
  • Plastic bag or wet bag for wet suits and towels
  • Hair ties, brush, and a comb if needed
  • Refillable water bottle with their name on it

Nice to have

  • Deck bag or small tote they can keep in the team area
  • A book, cards, or a quiet game for the long waits
  • Headphones, if the team allows them

Tip: Put the spare goggles and cap in a zip bag in the parent bag too. If the swimmer's bag walks off with the team, you still have backups in the stands.

2. The parent bag

Pool bleachers are often hot, humid, and hard. Plan for hours, not minutes.

  • Stadium seat, cushion, or folding chair (if the venue allows them)
  • Light layers. It can be warm on deck and cold in the lobby or parking lot.
  • Pen, highlighter, or a fine-tip marker for heat notes
  • Phone charger or battery pack
  • Cash and card (some meets sell heat sheets, programs, or snacks)
  • Something to do in long gaps
  • Parking and entrance info saved offline
  • Your own water and snacks

3. Heat and lane notes

Many parents keep a small record of their own swimmer's events: event number, heat, lane, and a line for the time. It saves you from scrambling through a long heat sheet each time.

A simple way to set it up:

  1. When the meet's heat sheet or event list is posted, find your swimmer's events.
  2. Write down event #, heat #, lane # for each one, in order.
  3. Leave a blank line after each for the result, or just a note ("new event," "felt good").
  4. Some swimmers like their event/heat/lane written on their hand or arm in marker. Ask your team what it usually does.

Keep it about your own swimmer. Official results come from the meet.

If you'd rather not build that from scratch, the Swim Meet Heat Sheet Clipboard is a printable set of heat and lane note pages for one session with a spare sheet for a second.

4. The cooler

Pack foods your swimmer already knows and likes. A meet isn't the time to try something new. For nutrition questions, ask your swimmer's coach or your family's doctor. This list is just about packing.

  • Water (more than you think)
  • Familiar snacks in small portions that are easy to eat between events
  • Something more filling for long gaps or a lunch break
  • Ice packs, plus a small dry bag for things that shouldn't get wet
  • Napkins, wipes, and a trash bag

Packing order that works: ice packs on the bottom, drinks next, then snacks on top so you're not digging. Put the dry stuff in a separate tote.

The Swim Meet Snack + Cooler Run List turns this section into a printable night-before store-run checklist and a top/middle/ice-base cooler map.

5. The night before

Most meet-morning stress comes from things you could have done at 8 p.m.

  • Bag packed and by the door, with suit, goggles, caps, and towels checked
  • Spare goggles and cap in the parent bag
  • Cooler items bought; cooler packed (or ready to fill from the fridge)
  • Meet address, parking info, and warm-up time saved on your phone
  • Carpool plan confirmed, if you're sharing rides
  • Clothes set out for the morning, including warm layers
  • Alarm set with enough time for traffic and parking

6. After the meet

  • Wet suits and towels out of the bag as soon as you get home
  • Refill the snack stash and water bottle
  • Put anything that broke or ran out on the list for next time
  • Jot down anything you want to remember (parking, where the team sat, what they wished they'd packed)

Want it all printed and in one place?

The Youth Swim Meet Weekend Parent Pack is a printable parent clipboard for one meet weekend. It includes a swimmer bag and gear checklist, session clock, heat notes, a snack and cooler list, carpool cards, and a post-meet laundry and restock page. It's an undated PDF, so you can reprint it for each meet.
